An extended period of stormy weather looms for the West as a complex low pressure system is poised to deliver heavy rain, heavy mountain snow and high winds to the region.

Flood watches have been issued for the Sierra Nevada (where snow levels will be quite high through tomorrow--above 7000 feet) and mountains of Southern California (where 5 to 10 inches of rain may splash down through Tuesday).

Heavy snow will develop across the Mountain West from the Cascades and Sierras (where snow levels will eventually lower) to the Tetons and Wasatch and eventually the Colorado Rockies.

In the immediate future, winter storm warnings have been posted for the mountains of extreme northern California effective at 4 p.m. PST today for elevations above 5500 feet.

Gale warnings are up all along the Pacific Coast where surf will be on the rise, too. In the East, lake-effect snows continue off Lakes Erie and Ontario where general 2- to 4-inch amounts are expected. Locally, up to 6 inches may pile up in the more persistent snow bands.
