Great weather made for great fishing at the tournament

29.09.2007, 07:57

The Nassau Sport Fishing Association's annual trout tournament was blessed with exceptional weather and excellent fishing. Fishing conditions were near perfect with light winds and by midday the temperatures near 70 degrees. Everyone had the goal to catch the big one, whether they were using live shrimp on a float rig, live mullet on the bottom, topwater plugs or jigs.

The biggest trout of the tourney was caught by Greg Nissen and team with a 3.52-pound speckled trout. George Smith and team captured second place with a 3.28-pound trout and they also captured third place in the aggregate.

George Smith and Jimmy Stubbs stated they released too many 2-pound trout to count, along with reds and puppy drum using lures only. I also can verify this because I fished very near them for about an hour and half during the tournament. Skip Swain captured third place with a 3.03-pound trout. Job well done.

The aggregate division was captured by Rocky Davis with weights totaling 9.52 pounds. Troy King placed second with weights totaling 8.80 pounds. Great job, guys!

The slam division - largest trout, redfish and flounder - is a very difficult division to win and requires extreme knowledge of your local waters and tides. First place was won by Matt Davis with weights totaling 11.18 pounds. Incidentally, Capt. T. D. Lacoss tied Matt with weights totaling 11.18 pounds, but timing is also important in a tourney. T.D. weighed his slam in behind Matt so he won second place in this division.

Third-place honors went to the fishing team of Mark Douglas, with weights totaling 10.84 pounds. As you can see, this was a tight division; all the anglers did an excellent job.

The youth division was captured by my daughter Kelsey Johnson with a 3.08-pound trout. Second place was won by Capt. Allen Mills' daughter Alexandra Mills with a 2.56-pound trout, and, keeping things in the family, Allen's niece and Capt. T. D. Lacoss's daughter Julia Lacoss won third with a 2.52-pound trout. Travis Mills, who is also Capt. Allen Mills' son, won fourth with a 2.44-pound trout and Daniel Tyler placed fifth with a 2.08-pound trout. This was also a tight division and the youth anglers did a fantastic job. These kids were up at 5 a.m.,on the water by 6 a.m. and fished until 4:30 p.m. Job well done, and I respect the fishing teams who brought along their kids for a day on the water. This was a fun tournament.
